Summer 2020

Trees to Consider:

American Dogwood

American Dogwood is one of the most spectacular flowering trees in the U.S.  It is a small, deciduous tree that can grow 20-40 feet high with single or multi trunks and graceful branches that bloom in spring with large showy white or pink flowers.

Latin Name: Cornus florida

Common Name(s): Flowering Dogwood, American Dogwood.

Tree Type: An ornamental tree with single or multi trunks.

Sun Requirements: Full sun and partial shade are best for this tree, meaning it prefers a minimum of four hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight each day.

Expected growth: This tree grows at a medium rate, with height increases of 13–24” per year. It can grow to 20-40 feet high.

Foliage: The tree develops red berries in autumn, and the leaves also turn a deep red before falling for winter.

Landscape Value: Dogwoods come in various colors and are a great woodland edge and understory tree (small enough and sufficiently shade tolerant to thrive under the canopies of other, taller trees). Dogwoods can be affected by many pests and diseases including anthracnose and powdery mildew so proper care is required to keep them healthy. There are several varieties of Dogwood that are more disease-resistant such as Appalachian Spring, Scarlet Fire, Rosy Teacups, Venus, Statrlight, Aurora, Cherokee Chief, Princess and Stellar Pink Dogwood.
