Mature trees and shrubs are some of the only elements in our landscape that we cannot easily replace or rearrange...

In fact, purposeful intervention with any tree requires thorough planning and vigilant follow-through. Mature trees are highly valuable assets to landscapes that take decades to develop. That’s why it’s so important to consult with arborists for their expertise in  the overall management of trees and shrubs on a property. All our arborists have training in tree risk assessment, in addition, some of our arborists have also undergone the more extensive Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) program offered by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

Mature Trees

As a tree grows older, its immune system weakens and becomes less tolerant of disturbances to its environment. Our arborists are skilled in developing programs that create healthy, sustainable environments for mature trees which protect them and allow them to thrive.

Purposeful intervention with any tree requires thorough planning and vigilant follow-through. Whether your goal is to save the prized mature tree in your front yard or to manage the health and safety of an entire campus of trees, consulting with an arborist to develop a plan can make all the difference. Once a strategy is established, your Almstead arborist will monitor the project through to completion -- carefully supervising the work performed by our arbor care, plant health care and organic care teams.

Risk Assessment

When managing trees in populated environments, it’s critical to identify those prone to structural failure. The purpose of a tree risk assessment is to identify and evaluate specific tree defects which could result in the tree being considered a risk to a variety of targets: including people, vehicles, buildings and other structures.

It takes a trained and experienced arborist to inspect a tree, conduct the required testing and interpret the results accurately. All Almstead arborists are trained in tree risk assessment. They record and evaluate a variety of data about each tree — species, diameter of the tree at breast height (DBH), tree height and crown spread, location, conditions and defects in the tree's trunk, crown and roots.  This helps them to determine risk of failure of each tree on the property.

Protecting Trees

During Construction

Due to their extensive root systems and need for stable environments, trees often suffer during construction, even though the goal is often to preserve them to enhance the landscape.

The proper preservation of trees during a construction project requires careful pre-planning and coordination between an arborist and all others involved throughout the duration of the project as well as a thorough aftercare program.

Consulting your Almstead arborist during the beginning planning stages, especially where you believe trees will be directly impacted, can help you look at the future construction in a completely new light. By working with your arborist and contractor(s) from the start, you can formulate a realistic tree preservation plan.
