Arbor Day Events 2022

NEW JERSEY

Ridgewood Earth Day Fair

We kicked off our Arbor Day celebrations for 2022 at the Ridgewood Daffodil Festival & Earth Day Fair. The event attracted a large crowd of residents from the neighboring region. Our Junior Arborist Station, and an appearance by Treetures character Sprig, was a big hit with the children (Almstead partners with Treetures to carry the message of tree planting and care to children).

Attendees chatted with NJ Branch Manager, Ryan Duff and arborists Oscar Winfrey and Jon Olsz about arboriculture and picked up free Norway Spruce and Black Spruce saplings, Almstead bags and water bottles. Visitors also had the opportunity to enter our raffle for a free tree planting.

Ringwood — The New Weis Center

Almstead certified arborist, Jon Olsz, was at The New Weis Center in Ringwood, NJ to participate in their Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 24th. He talked about trees and shrubs with visitors and handed out Black Gum saplings and Almstead giveaways.

Hoboken — Church Square Park

Ryan Duff (Almstead's NJ Branch Manager) Ravi Bhalla, (Mayor of Hoboken) and students and parents from Stevens Cooperative School planted two Serviceberry (Amelanchier) trees in Church Square Park, Hoboken as a part of the town's Climate Action Plan to improve the environment while also beautifying public spaces. Ryan also explained the right way to plant trees to the students.

NEW YORK

Bronx — Wave Hill Public Garden

Almstead once again sponsored the Junior Arborist Station at Wave Hill Public Garden on Arbor Day. Kids ages five and up wore tree-climbing harnesses and hardhats and, under the supervision of Almstead professional climbers, ascended into the canopy of a large sugar maple tree to get a birds-eye view of Wave Hill. It is estimated that 150 young climbers were hoisted to the top of the tree. Ken Almstead (CEO) was on hand to give his expert advice on trees and plants to visitors and Almstead staff handed out free Eastern Redbud and Arrowwood Viburnum saplings as well as other giveaways. A highlight at the event was an appearance by Almstead’s Arbor Day mascot Sprig “The Treedom Fighter” — from Judith Blau’s whimsical and popular Treetures series of books.

Eastchester — Tree Plantings by Girl & Boy Scouts

Almstead celebrated Arbor Day with tree plantings by the Eastchester Girl and Boy Scouts at the Magic Treetures Forest Nursery in Eastchester, NY on April 29th. We donated Norway Spruce saplings and gave away water bottles and pens. Michael Almstead (VP) and Mark McGovern (Arborist) and their crew were there to instruct the scouts on proper planting techniques. Also present were Judith Blau (author and creator of Treetures Environmental Program), Anthony S. Colavita ( Supervisor of the town of Eastchester) and Treetures character Steward.

Patterson — Matthew Paterson Elementary School

Almstead took part in multiple events on Friday, April 29th to celebrate Arbor Day. We donated a Kousa Dogwood tree and planting to Matthew Paterson Elementary School in Patterson, NY. Michael Almstead (arborist and VP) and Matthew Camarota (arborist) gave away Norway Spruce saplings, water bottles and pens to all the students.

Michael also discussed the history of Arbor Day with the kindergarten class the importance of trees and shrubs to our planet. The kids were amazed to know that Almstead has been celebrating Arbor Day every year in the community since 1964.

New Rochelle — Henry Barnard School — Tree Planting

Almstead donated a beautiful American Yellowood tree to the Village of Rye Brook, N.Y. for Arbor Day. Present were Rye Brook Mayor, Jason Klein, Rye Brook officials Chris Bradbury, Briggitte Dix, Greg Rivera, and Joey-Chris Vasile as well as N.Y State Senator Shelly Mayer and N.Y.
