The science of preserving nature since 1964 • Celebrating our 60th Anniversary this year!

Ken Almstead

Certified Arborist & CEO

Letter from the CEO

I am filled with immense pride and gratitude to announce that we are celebrating our 60th Anniversary this year. Our journey began in 1964 when my father, Richard Almstead, founded the company as a one-man operation. Since then, we have blossomed into a full-service arboriculture firm with four offices. Despite our growth, we have remained a family business dedicated to providing exceptional tree, shrub, and lawn care services. As an industry leader in the NY/NJ/CT area, we proudly serve Westchester and Putnam counties in New York, much of New York City, Fairfield County in Connecticut, and northern New Jersey. In addition, since the early 1990s, Almstead’s Nursery Division has been producing high-quality organic mulch and compost and offering recycling and wood grinding services at our facilities in Ghent and New Rochelle, NY. Our unwavering commitment to quality and our deep-rooted passion for arboriculture have been the cornerstones of our success. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our dedicated family of arborists, technicians and staff, whose contributions have been instrumental in shaping our company into what it is today. Additionally, I extend my deepest thanks to our valued customers and suppliers for their unwavering support and partnership over the years. We look forward to continuing to serve you and grow together in the years to come..

As we embrace the warmth, beauty and vibrancy of summer, I am delighted to reflect on how we can be of service to you as your tree, shrub and lawn care provider. If you have already renewed your plant health care and lawn care contract with us, you’re well on your way to enjoying a beautiful and healthy landscape in 2024. For those who haven’t renewed yet, there’s still time for us to perform the essential services for the rest of the year. Once you have the basics in place, please reach out to your arborist for expert advice on management and improvements to enhance your outdoor spaces.

This spring, we once again had the pleasure of celebrating Arbor Day with several wonderful events across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. My father, Richard Almstead, started the tradition of celebrating Arbor Day thirty years ago and we’ve been doing it as an annual event ever since. Over the years we have cultivated strong relationships with community organizations, including schools, nature centers, town boards, and garden centers. These collaborations have allowed us to connect with local children, teachers, parents, and other community members to share our knowledge and passion for arboriculture. This year, we participated in many significant events and proudly gave away over 1,000 tree saplings. Be sure to read our Arbor Day article for more details on these activities and their impact.

Summer brings its own set of challenges, such as pests, lawn fungi, and heat stress, which can affect your landscape. In this issue, we have articles that address all three, offering valuable insights and solutions to keep your gardens and lawns thriving during the hottest months.

Now is also an excellent time to start planning for future plantings. If you are considering planting trees or shrubs in the fall or next spring, selecting the right species, planning ahead for sourcing, and planting them correctly are crucial decisions that will impact your landscape for decades to come. Trees can significantly enhance the curb appeal of your property and increase its value and attractiveness. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is through strategic tree planting. Our article on this topic provides useful tips for using trees and shrubs to boost the visual appeal of your property.

Summer storms are always a cause for concern, and being prepared is key to mitigating their impact. In this issue, we discuss how to promptly assess storm damage and take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and health of your landscape. Our expert team is always ready to assist you with any emergency tree care needs.

As a family-owned business, we take great pride in maintaining strong connections with our customers. Our team is easily accessible by phone, email, and through our website. We deeply value your feedback and appreciate it when you share your experiences with us, whether on our site or on consumer review platforms such as Google, Angie's List, HomeAdvisor, or Yelp. I am pleased to report that almost all the feedback we receive is overwhelmingly positive.

Here are some recent reviews from our satisfied clients. We encourage you to leave a review of your own. If you are unsure where to post, please contact your local branch office, and they will provide a link specific to your branch where you can share your thoughts.

"All of the staff, the technicians, the pruners, and the arborists have been highly trained and good quality individuals. I am particularly in praise of their arborists. First Jon and now Oscar Winfrey. Oscar is very knowledgeable, punctual, responsive and accommodating. The service he has provided has been exceptional. I also want to include that I have used Almstead Tree and Shrub for years. I needed a company that could provide completely organic care of my grass, trees and shrubs. Over the years, my land has achieved a beautiful and healthy home. My property stands out in the neighborhood. All the wildlife are very happy here. My garden is my Sanctuary."

"Almstead and their team consisting of Roque, Silvestre, Javier and Martin came and quickly and effectively did great work removing our trees, pruning, along with additional work, Thank you! Also thank you to arborist Matt Camarota as well."

Scott B. – Hawthorne, NY Branch

"Jeff Trasher's (arborist) recommendations on cutting and pruning my trees were excellent - delivering the desired outcome of increasing sun on landscaping beds and reducing shade on the back patio. Victor and his team did a great job executing the work. They were fast, careful, and did a great job! I was really pleased that I chose Almstead (again) for my tree work."

Katia F. – Connecticut Branch

"We just had Almstead out to clear some trees and do some pruning at our property near Riverdale in The Bronx. The head arborist came out to assess our situation and gave us excellent advice (and the best price estimate that we received). When it came time to do the work, the arborist was there to personally instruct the team in the morning. We were so impressed with the professionalism and skill of the crew who took great care to protect our building and leave the place tidy. They went well beyond what was required in the estimate and did some extra pruning just because they had the time. We had a great experience with Almstead and would hire them again."
